Elections of Board Chair and Vice Chair
The Regional Municipality of York Police Services Board re-elected Mayor of the City of Markham Frank Scarpitti as its Chair for 2017. Chair Scarpitti has served on the Board since 2007 and as Chair since 2012. In accepting the position, Mayor Scarpitti thanked the members of the Police Services Board, the Executive Command Team and Board staff for their support and hard work and looks forward to continue serving the interests of our many communities.
The Board re-elected Mayor of the Town of East Gwillimbury Virginia Hackson as Vice Chair of the Board for 2017. Mayor Hackson has served on the Board since 2012 and has been elected as its Vice Chair for the second consecutive year. Mayor Hackson thanked the Board and looks forward to ensuring that public safety and strong police governance continue to be the Board’s priorities.
Accessible Customer Service Policy Update
The York Regional Police Services Board amended its Accessible Customer Service Policy to ensure compliance with Ontario Regulation 191/11 Integrated Accessibility Standards under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005. The amendments to the Board’s Policy affirm the Board’s commitment to meeting the accessibility needs of people with disabilities so that all people have equitable access to the Board’s services and that persons with disabilities receive the same level of service as other customers. 2014-2016 Business Plan Outcomes
The Chief of Police provided a final report to the Board on the achievements of the 2014-2016 Business Plan. Some of the accomplishments include: establishment of a mental health issues working group; enhancing safety messaging to seniors; using a data-driven approach to crime and traffic safety; enhancing the availability of online reporting and mobile services for residents; expansion of in-car cameras; spousal support network for staff members with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The new 2017-2019 Business Plan will be available in March 2017.
Report on Board’s Diversity Policy
The Board’s Diversity Policy promotes the delivery of policing services in a manner that is respectful, equitable and inclusive of the Region’s many communities. The Board received a report from the Chief of Police on community engagement initiatives. Annual events hosted by York Regional Police include Canadian Citizenship ceremonies; Black History and Asian Heritage Month celebrations; Menorah Lighting ceremonies; Places of Worship Tours; Multicultural Day Celebrations; Commemorations of International Human Rights Day; International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
YRP is also committed to providing extensive training to its members on diversity and inclusivity including training in Community Policing; Hate Crime Investigations; Human Rights courses, Places of Worship Tour; Transgender Awareness and inclusive Leadership training.
Board Supports 25th Annual Police Appreciation Night
The Board supported sponsorship for the 25th Annual Police Appreciation Night to be held on May 17, 2017. The Police Appreciation Night Dinner is an annual event aimed at raising funds in support of community and safety programs and equipment.
Board Supports Yellow Brick House
The Board approved sponsorship in support of Yellow Brick House Annual Gala to be held on March 3, 2017. The Yellow Brick House is a non-profit charitable organization that provides emergency shelter, counselling and supportive services to abused women and children.
Board Supports Character Community
The Board approved sponsorship in support of the 11th Annual Character Community Awards Celebration to be held on April 26, 2017. The Character Community Foundation of York Region is committed to making York Region a Character Community by nurturing positive character attributes and enhancing York Region as a desirable place to live, learn, work and play.
