VIRGINIA HACKSON, CHAIR
MAYOR OF THE TOWN OF EAST GWILLIMBURY
Mayor Virginia Hackson was re-elected as Chair of the Regional Municipality of York Police Services Board in January 2021. Mayor Hackson has served on the Board since 2012 and as Chair since 2017. She is committed to strong and safe communities and open and transparent police governance.
Mayor Hackson is in her third term as Mayor of the Town of East Gwillimbury. In 2001, after retiring from 30 years of municipal management, Virginia turned her focus to community service serving the people of East Gwillimbury as a Councillor for three terms. She understands how important providing quality Town services are for all citizens, and balancing growth while preserving the Town’s natural environment and cultural heritage.
Mayor Hackson represents the Town on York Region Council, is currently the Chair of the Audit Committee and a member of both the Broadband Strategy and Senior’s Housing Strategy Task Forces. In addition, Virginia is a member of the Board for the Housing York Region, Cedar Centre, Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and Royal Oak Seniors Board.
Virginia has been recognized for her significant contributions to the community including the Queen’s Jubilee Medal and Diamond Jubilee Medal for her contribution to community service.
Virginia is a lifelong learner, committed to continuous improvement through personal growth. She holds a BA from the University of Waterloo, as well as a B Ed, a Master’s Certificate in Municipal Management from York University and a Recreation Diploma from Conestoga College.
