2016 Civic Leadership Award
The Board presented Lina Bigioni with the 2016 Award for Civic Leadership in recognition of Mrs. Bigioni’s commitment to positive social change in our community. The Board created its Award for Civic Leadership in 2006 to recognize the highest level of excellence in civic duty. Recipients of this award are stellar leaders in their fields who enhance community safety and have demonstrated excellence in civic leadership.
2016 Annual Crime Statistics
The overall crime rate in York Region increased by 1.7 percent in 2016. The property crime rate increased by 2.2 percent and violent crime rate went up by 3.0 percent. Robbery violations increased by 22.2 percent The rate of sexual violations increased by 15.2 percent in 2016 with 85 more reported cases than in the previous year. Reported hate crimes occurrences decreased by 3.4 percent in 2016. 9-1-1 calls also decreased by 1.6 percent in 2016, and the clearance rate decreased slightly in 2016. The overall crime rate has seen slight increases since 2014; however York Region still remains one of the safest communities in Canada.
Proceeds of Crime Report
For the provincial fiscal year, York Regional Police turned over $870,450 in cash and assets to the government under the Ontario Civil Remedies Act (2001) and federal legislation. Property and proceeds of crime seized by York Regional Police in recent years include money, residences used in the cultivation and/or production of illegal drugs and the production of counterfeit documents, vehicles operated by drunk drivers, drug traffickers and from robberies.
The Civil Remedies Act allows for the disbursement of the proceeds of crime to victim compensation, cost recovery and grants to police services. Between April 1, 2016 and March 31, 2017, York Regional Police received $13 million in funding and $200,000 of that total was from the Proceeds of Crime grant. Those funds were used to operate access equipment and for operating and training costs to combat child sex trafficking.
York Regional Police Golf Tournament
The Board purchased sponsorship for the 12th Annual Golf Tournament taking place June 30, 2017 in Kleinburg, ON. The tournament supports the Community Safety Village, Big Brothers Big Sisters of York Region, Victim Services of York Region and Community Living Aurora/Newmarket.
York Region Alliance of African Canadian Communities
The Board approved a donation of a grant to hire three youth members as Leaders in Training. The York Region Alliance of African Canadian Communities is a non-profit organization committed to creating a cohesive and influential York Region African Canadian community through advocacy and resource development as it relates to culture, education, employment, social services and governmental responsibilities.
Crime Stoppers of York Region
The Board approved Gold sponsorship in support of Crime Stoppers of York Region’s 26th Annual Wayne Snooks Golf Classic to be held at the Cardinal Golf Club in King on June 6th, 2017. Crime Stoppers encourages the citizens of York Region to assist the police in solving crimes.
2017 Transformation Award for Public Service
The Board approved support of the 2017 Transformation Award for Public Service taking place June 6, 2017 in Toronto, ON. The Transformation Awards celebrates leadership, excellence, harmony and innovation and this year’s recipient is Chief Eric Jolliffe.
