Board Meeting Highlights - December 4, 2019

Policing in a Multicultural Community

York Regional Police made a presentation to the Board on “Policing in a Multicultural Community”. York Region welcomes over 11,000 newcomers annually with forty-nine percent identifying as visible minorities and forty-seven percent are newcomers from China, Iran, India, Philippines and Pakistan. York Region has residents from over 230 ethnicities who speak over 120 languages and dialects. York Regional Police has taken advantage of numerous opportunities for positive community engagement with thousands of newcomers to the Region’s five Immigrant Welcome Centres. The centres have been around for the past 12 years, and York Regional Police have conducted over 1,000 presentations at these centres. York Regional Police has continued to participate in building cohesive and resilient communities while engaging in collaborative work to enhance the lives of those residing in York Region. Expert Panel on Police Officer Deaths by Suicide

The Board received a report on the Ontario Chief Coroner’s review of police officer deaths by suicide. An expert panel consisting of mental health professionals, a serving police officer and a retired Chief of Police developed a report which includes a number of recommendations including the creation of a standing body that will address deficiencies in mental health supports for police members in Ontario and will recognize and assist with the mental health and well-being of police officers.  Police services will be directed to develop and implement a comprehensive mental health and wellness strategy by June 30, 2021. The Ministry of the Solicitor General is committed to reviewing the report and its recommendations to help inform how the mental health of police members can be supported.  Board Report
