Board Meeting Highlights - June 16, 2021

MOMENT OF SILENCE

The Board held a moment of silence in memory of the 215 Indigenous children and many other victims of the Canadian residential school system and in memory of the Muslim family in London, Ontario who died in a senseless and brutal act of hate and their young son who is still recovering in hospital.

Board Elects New Chair and Vice Chair

The Board elected Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua as Chair of the Board until the Board’s first meeting of 2022. Chair Bevilacqua, who serves as Mayor of the City of Vaughan since 2010, has been a member of the Police Services Board since 2017. Mayor Bevilacqua is committed to advancing community safety in York Region and is committed to ensuring strong oversight and good governance practices.  Chair Bevilacqua believes building meaningful partnerships with the community is a critical function of policing, and that we must do our part to build a more fair and just society, where equity and inclusion serve as core values.

The Board also elected Regional Chairman and C.E.O. Wayne Emmerson as its Vice Chair. This is Chairman Emmerson’s first term as Vice Chair of the York Regional Police Services Board. Chairman Emmerson is currently serving his second term as Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of York and was elected by members of Regional Council to serve for the 2018-2022 term. Chairman Emmerson has nearly three decades of political experience, including his role as Mayor for the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville for 17 years. Focused on getting results, his experience and leadership is well-respected across York Region and at all levels of government.
