2021 York Regional Police Budget
The Police Services Board approved the 2021 net Operating Budget for York Regional Police of $360.7 million, which is a 3.65 percent increase over the 2020 Budget and includes the addition of 23 police officers and civilian members to address growth in the Region impacting front-line policing, tackling violent and organized crimes, improvements to member wellness and to address legislative requirements. The 2021 Police Operating Budget continues to maintain the lowest policing cost per capita in Canada among comparable police services serving populations of over 1 million residents.
The Board also approved the 2021 York Regional Police Capital Budget of $34.3 million with a Capital Spend Authority of $47.5 million. The expenditures include $20.0 million for facilities primarily for the construction of a new police district serving Aurora, Newmarket and East Gwillimbury, $4.5 million for vehicles, $5.2 million for information technology, $3.0 million for specialized equipment and $1.6 million for communication equipment. Financing for the capital budget is a combination of contributions from reserves, debenture proceeds repaid from development charges, debt reduction reserve funding, development charge collections and external funding.
The 2021 Police Budget will be tabled at Regional Council in early 2021.
Board Recognizes Outgoing Member
The Board thanked Vice Chair John Molyneaux who has served on the board for 10 years. His term will conclude at the end of December. He is one of the longest-serving members in the history of the Board and his impact on police oversight, governance and community safety in the Region will be long-lasting to the citizens of York Region. Vice Chair Molyneaux was appointed to the Board in November 2010 and has supported the Board’s mandate and demonstrated his commitment to police governance and community safety. As a member of the Board, he has been involved in significant board decisions, including the budget approval processes and the approval of the current Business Plan as well as the recent round of contract negotiations. As Vice Chair he provided leadership and participated in numerous YRP events over the years.
Vice Chair Molyneaux thanked the Board for the many years he was able to serve on this Board and thanked the members of York Regional Police for ensuring the safety of the citizens of York Region.

The Regional Municipality of York Police Services Board is a seven-member civilian Board that oversees and governs the York Regional Police and is comprised of one member as Head of Municipal Council, three members are appointed by resolution of Regional Council and three by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
