Deputy Chief Alvaro Almeida Announces Retirement

York Region – The York Regional Police Service Board would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Deputy Chief Alvaro Almeida, who, after 37 years of policing, has announced his retirement effective June 16, 2025.
“Over the course of his exceptional career, Deputy Chief Almeida has served the residents of York Region with commitment, passion, and professionalism. On behalf of the Police Service Board, I extend our gratitude for his numerous contributions to York Regional Police and the community, especially over the past 2.5 years as a member of the Executive Leadership Team,” said Board Chair Steve Pellegrini.
“Throughout his entire career, Deputy Chief Almeida has represented York Regional Police with Professionalism and Compassion,” said Chief Jim MacSween. “He has demonstrated a commitment to teamwork and a strong dedication to making York Regional Police a better place for all. He is known Provincially and Nationally for his knowledge and experience, his positive nature, and his willingness to work collaboratively to get the job done.”
Deputy Chief Almeida has made significant contributions to policing initiatives through his involvement with numerous police associations and partners. He sits as a member of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police Organized Crime Committee, as well as the Counter-Terrorism and National Security Committees. He also represents YRP on the Canadian Integrated Response to Organized Crime.
Deputy Chief Almeida has always believed in the importance of giving back to the community. He has served as a Board Member for 360Kids and has actively volunteered his time to Special Olympics Ontario and the Law Enforcement Torch Run. He has also served as the Executive Sponsor for the YRP Holiday Heroes program and through his leadership, this campaign exceeded the $1 million dollar mark in funds raised. An active cyclist, Deputy Chief Almeida participates in the Canadian Police and Peace Officers Ride to Remember as well as rides raising funds for Mental Health Awareness and Cancer Research.
The Board will be making preparations to recruit for the Deputy Chief role in the coming weeks.
The Board wishes Deputy Chief Almeida the very best on his upcoming retirement and is grateful for his 37 years of public service.

The Regional Municipality of York Police Service Board is a seven-member civilian Board that oversees and governs the York Regional Police. A municipal Board is comprised of one member as Head of Municipal Council or other appointed member of council; three members are appointed by resolution of Regional Council and three by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
